Georgina Chapman Pulls Marchesa's Show From The NYFW Fall 2018 Line-Up Following Her Separation From Harvey Weinstein
In its first season since news of Harvey Weinstein's abuse broke, Marchesa has announced that it will be pulling its show from the New York Fashion Week line-up on February 14. According to the New York Post, the brand's designer and Weinstein's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman, decided to skip a show down the runway in favour of a digital presentation.
It's been just over three months since Chapman announced that she was separating from Weinstein after dozens of women came forward with allegations of sexual abuse stringing over three decades of the film mogul's career. Back in October, she released a statement saying: 'My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.'
Since then, Chapman's career and the reputation of Marchesa - which she co-founded with model Karen Craig back in 2004 - has become collateral damage, with the brand losing numbers of employees and red carpet appearances as well as collaborations, including one with Helzberg Diamonds, who announced that they would be putting a hold on the collaboration 'indefinitely'.
A source told The Post, “Georgina couldn't go through with it. She was too scared. They were gung ho [...] but as they got closer, she choked.” It's understandable that, if the source is correct, Chapman had anxieties building up towards Fashion Week and made the decision shake things up to dodge potential issues.
The brand didn't say too much about the change in programming, with a Marchesa spokesperson telling The Post, “Marchesa is looking forward to presenting their Fall '18 collection in an updated format this season.” Despite all the goings-on surrounding Marchesa, the show itself - renowned for its beauty every season - will be sorely missed on the NYFW show programming.
