An Azzedine Alaïa Exhibition Is Coming To This London Museum Next Spring

The Design Museum in London has announced that it will be hosting a fashion exhibition celebrating the work of the late designer, Azzedine Alaïa. The Tunisian-born designer died last month from heart failure, but had been working closely with guest curator Mark Wilson at the museum for the upcoming retrospective, a rare move when it comes to fashion exhibitions.

The exhibition, Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier, will be open for five months in the spring, and will showcase rare pieces from the designer's archives in celebration of the Paris-based designer's 35-year career. The exhibition also gives great insight into his genius creative process, which serves as a fantastic continuation of his legacy.

Alaïa rose to fame in the '90s, and his name was thrust into the spotlight by the famous scene in Clueless where protagonist Cher is robbed at gunpoint and refuses to get on the floor to avoid ruining her dress, exclaiming, “This is an Alaïa...it's a totally important designer!” His designs have been seen on the biggest names from Naomi Campbell (who was so close to Azzedine, she referred to him as 'Papa') to Rihanna, and his one-of-a-kind take on style will never be matched.

“Following his untimely passing on 18 November 2017, the Design Museum will now present this unique exhibition planned by Alaïa himself, exploring his passion and energy for fashion as he himself intended it to be seen,” said a museum spokesperson. “Azzedine Alaïa was recognised throughout his life as a master couturier who expressed the timeless beauty of the female form in the most refined degree of haute couture.”

We're super excited to see a self-curated exhibition from such a sorely-missed fashion icon.

Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier will run from May 10th, 2018.
