How To Come Across As More Organised (When You're Actually A Mess)

How To Come Across As More Organised (When You're Actually A Mess)

Do you ever look around and everyone else seems to have their shit together, while you’ve lost your car keys, haven’t showered, and keep telling yourself that you’ll do your errands tomorrow? Welcome to the club.

I think it’s okay to be unorganised. To an extent anyway. As long as you’re aware of it, you’ve just got to approach situations differently to those who seem to just glide through life. When it comes to morphing into one of these prepared people: I don’t have the answer. I am a mess at heart and, so far, I am yet to find a cure. Pretending to be organised, however, is something I can help you with.

If you want to come across as somebody who's got their shit together, there are some traits to follow. If you're a nightmare when it comes to turning up to work late, rock up in your best outfit, a coffee in hand, and a complete set of stationary and nobody will doubt your ‘I’ve got my shit together’ aesthetic. They don’t call it fashionably late for nothing.

If you’re always getting distracted, turn off your phone notifications while working. If you’re unorganised when it comes to money, pay for things in cash, rather than nervously tapping your debit card, praying you actually have money in your account. If you’re bad at time management, be more productive. Do squats while brushing your teeth for all I care. Be more aware. Keep up with the news. Listen to people. Smile at strangers. Just fake it until you make it, I guess.

It’s the little things, right? There’s no point asking a scatterbrain to change their personality and characteristics, if that’s just who you are. But that doesn’t mean you can’t adopt little habits. Stand up straight. Give eye contact when you are talking to people. Take yourself seriously, and others will catch on too.

Many of us mistake unorganised individuals as weak, when that doesn’t have to be the case. Just because you’re forgetful, messy and often flustered, that doesn’t mean you can’t also be hardworking and know what you want. People may think I’m an unfocussed person – forever going off on tangents – but I’m also creative, and full of ideas. The world is full of unorganised messes, but it’s also full of successful, happy people.

Sometimes I feel like my head isn’t screwed on properly. But I still get through things my own way. I got good grades at school. I've travelled to many beautiful places. I write for this website. So, my number one piece of advice to anyone doubting their capabilities – to anyone only seeing themselves as a mess – is to just stop worrying. Those people that you look up to, who always seem to land on their feet: they probably see themselves as a mess at times too. As long as you confidently bullshit your way through life, you can paint yourself as pretty much anything you want to be.
