Will & Grace's Cast Has Said The Reboot Will Be Committed To Celebrating LGBTQA+ Culture And Sexuality

Will & Grace's Cast Has Said The Reboot Will Be Committed To Celebrating LGBTQA+ Culture And Sexuality

The highly-anticipated Will & Grace reboot is coming soon, and the more fans are learning, the more excited they're getting. In a panel at this weekend's Tribeca TV Festival, festival-goers saw the cast opening up about the upcoming return to television, and how both the show and characters have evolved.

Will & Grace in its heyday was one of the very first sitcoms to feature openly gay characters, and the change in social dynamic since then has helped the show to elaborate more on sexuality. Eric McCormack, who plays Will in the show, commented on how Will's sexual escapades weren't given enough credit, and how the reboot is bringing change. 'There’s lots of episodes where I dated, and not just dated, I made out with Taye Diggs,' said McCormack. 'People are always like, "Oh, Will never had any sex". Will had lots of sex off-camera. It’s a sitcom. I’m not going to take my dick out. But in episode two, I take my dick out. It’s a whole new world.'

Debra Messing, who will be reviving her character Grace added how the current social climate with regards to the LGBTQA+ community will be reflected in the new season. 'Back then, LGB, we stopped at B. And now 11 years later, the conversation has expanded. There’s T, A, I, and gender fluidity and there are all these things that are now finally being celebrated in our culture,' Messing said. 'The thing we all committed to one another was that we’re going to be the show that we always were. We’re going to talk about what’s happening now.'

Megan Mullally, the woman behind the infamously fabulous Karen, agreed, saying 'When Will & Grace was on the air, at least for the first several seasons, there were no other shows that had gay characters. We were standing alone in that regard. Now, if you don’t have at least four gay characters, people are like, "What’s this piece of shit?"'

Another thing that audiences can look forward to is a way more badass Grace. Grace in the original seasons could be very man-focused and emotionally submissive in her relationships, and Messing made it very clear that in the reboot, she wanted Grace to have learnt from her mistakes. 'The only thing that I asked for was that Grace be a feminist,' she said. Unless you want to be bitterly disappointed, don't anticipate any change from Karen, though. When asked if she wanted her character to change, Mullally simply said 'no'.

Will & Grace returns to American screens on September 28th, with a UK transmission date still tbc.
